How big is Asia?

Asia is the biggest continent. Its area off 44 million square kilometer is greater than North & South America put together, and four times greater than Europe. The coastline of Asia is almost 130,000 kilometeres long --- more than three times the distance around the world.


What are Asia's main features?

Asia's natural features are very varried, from the world's highest mountains (the Himalayas) to long rivers (such as the Chang Jiang), lakes as big as seas (the Caspian) and deserts like the Gobi. There are hot jungles,cold forests,grasslands and snowy tundras.


Where are Asia's high and low points?

[size=12] Asia has the highest and lowest points on the Earth's land. Mount Everest (over 8,800 m above sea level) is the highest point. The shores of the Dead Sea (almost 400 m below sea level) are the lowest points to be found anywhere on land.[/size]

Note: In the Dead Sea, you can float while reading the paper! This is because the water is unusually salty and supports your weight.


Where are Asia's deepest gorges?

The deepest gorges cut by rivers are those made by the rivers Indus, Brahmaputra and Ganges which flow through India and Pakistan. In places, these rivers cut gorges that are more than five kilometeres deep.


Does Asia have more people than any other continent?

Yes. As well as covering one-third of the Earth's land surface, Asia has about three-fifths of the world's people. More than 3.5 billion people live in Asia, in 49 countries.


Which Country has the most language?

India has 14 major languages and more than 160 others. There are also 700 dialects (local or regional varriations). Hindi is the official language of India and many Indians also speak in English.


Where is the Khyber Pass?

The Kybher Pass is in northwest Pakistan. Here the land is rugged and hilly. The pass is a route through the mountains to Afghanistan.

What is the Tonle Sap?

The Tonle Sap is a large lake in Cambodia, in Southeast Asia. During the summer floods, its waters cover some 10,000 square kilometres. The lake is formed by water from the Mekong River, the longest river in Southeast Asia (4,500 km) and the fifth longest in Asia.

Which is the highest mountain in India?

To the north of India rise the mighty Himalayas, the highest mountains in the world. The highest peaks, including Mt. Everest itself, are in Nepal, but in India,too,has some towering peaks. The highest mountain in India is Nanda Devi, which is 7,817 m high.

Angkor Wat is a temple in Cambodia and the biggest religious building in the world. It was build by the Khmer people of Southeast Asia in the 1100s in honour of a Hindu god. Later Buddhists added to the temple buildings. Angkor Wat was abandoned by the 1500s. Wooden buildings rotted away and the stone temple was overgrown by forest. In the 1860s a Frenchman discovered the ruins.

Where is Siberia?

East of Ural Mountains lies Siberia, a wilderness of 14 million square kilometres stretching to the Pacific Ocean. Siberia is a region of vast forests, river and frozen plains. Here are the coldest inhabited places in the world, where winter temperatures dop to -67 degree celcius.

The Chang Jiang or Yangtze Kiang, in China is the longest river in Asia. It flows into the South China Sea.

Which Asian City is sacred to three religions?

Jerusalem is a holy city for people of three faiths: Jew, Christians and Muslims. Jerusalem was divided between Israel and Jordan until 1967. Since the Israel has held all of the city. For Jews, Jerusalem is the ancient Hebrew capital, where King Solomon built the Temple. For Christians, the city is where Jesus Christ preached and was crucified. Muslims believe that Muhammad rose to heaven from a rock in Jerusalem.


Where is Asia's biggest island?

The island of Borneo is the biggest island in Asia. Its 736,000 square kilometeres are shared by three countries: Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei. Borneo is a mountainous island and much of it is covered in dense rainforest, although logging companies are steadily cutting down the trees for timber.
